About Jerry Novesky

Before he picked up his first camera at about age 8, Jerry Novesky already was proficient at developing sheet and roll film for his father in the darkroom of their Middletown, NY, home. He gave up images for words in college, however, and, mentored by Walter Tevis (author of The Hustler and The Man Who Fell to Earth), earned a Master’s Degree in Creative Writing from Ohio University. He picked up a camera again after teaching writing and literature for several years (OCCC, St. Micheal’s College, The University of Vermont) and has since published dozens of articles, photographs and poems in publications ranging from American Health to Zahir. An avid fly fisher and conservationist, he has edited or designed more than two dozen books on natural history, outdoor recreation and Hudson Valley history, including Dutch Architecture Near Albany: The Polgreen Photographs; The Savvy Adventure Traveler; and The Ashokan Catskills: A Natural History. Following a nearly year-long cross-country road trip in 1996, he co-founded The Valley Table: The Magazine of Hudson Valley Farms, Food and Cuisine, serving as its editor and chief photographer until the magazine was sold in 2019. He and his wife, Janet Crawshaw, live in Newburgh, not far from the Hudson River.

Jerry’s photographs have been featured in solo shows (Farmers and Friends, 2015, and The Peony Project, 2016), at The Valley Table Gallery (Beacon), in the Artists Choose Artists exhibit at the Longyear Gallery (Margaretville), at the Moviehouse Gallery (Millerton), and were included in the inaugural exhibit celebrating the opening of Orange Regional Medical Center (Middletown).
